What is the Beatitude?

A prayer of Jesus

A teaching of Jesus about who is blessed in the Kingdom of God

The Beatitudes are teachings Jesus gave about who is blessed in the Kingdom of God. They appear in the Sermon on the Mount and describe the qualities and situations that God regards with favor, often turning worldly ideas of happiness upside down. Each line begins with “Blessed are…” and names people like the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and the persecuted, along with the promises attached to these traits.

This isn’t a prayer, a set of commandments, or a liturgical practice. It’s a description of the kinds of people who belong to God’s reign and the blessings they receive, highlighting attitudes and virtues that reflect living under God’s rule. Understanding them helps you see what Jesus values and what living as part of the Kingdom looks like in everyday life.
